Wakkanai Alternative and Renewable Energy Study Group (Wakkanai-the northernmost city of Japan) and Hrein Energy Inc. (Sapporo) had an open joint experiment on producing organic hydride out of locally wind-generated hydrogen in Wakkanai Park on July 16, 2008. The purpose of this experiment was to present and promote a new business model formed by a regional partnership, bringing together projects that were respectively implemented, namely a demonstration project of hydrogen generation from wind-powered electricity that was implemented by Wakkanai Alternative and Renewable Energy Study Group (2005 through 2007) and two-year demonstration project (2006-2007) of which Hrein Energy Inc. was responsible for implementing under the scheme of “Promotion for Developing Industrial Technologies aiming achievements of Kyoto Protocol Goals” by International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT). Organic hydride is a hydrogen storage method of liquid phase when under atmospheric temperature and pressure. Such property equivalent to that of gasoline or kerosene, handling, transporting and distributing of it to the points of demand by tank trucks can be made easy. This open experiment was also presented as a local-to-local business model in the “Eco, Energy and Community Development Summit” held between 25th-28th July, 2008, organized by Sapporo Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In addition, the hydrogen stored in the form of organic hydride during this experiment was later transported from Wakkanai all the way to Sapporo to be used for hydrogen vehicles demonstration on July 28 during the above-mentioned event. |
